VEVAY, Ind. — A wet, sloppy field and a handful of costly mistakes proved to be too much for the Switzerland County Pacers to overcome Friday night, as visiting South Decatur rallied for a 25-21 victory and spoiled the Pacers' Homecoming celebration. Switzerland County led 21-19 heading into the fourth quarter, but South Decatur scored the only touchdown of the final period on a six-yard pass to pull out the win. The Pacers were held scoreless in the second half after putting together a strong offensive showing over the first two quarters. The Pacers actually outgained the Cougars on the ground, 143-119, and finished with 302 total yards compared to South Decatur's 317. Switzerland County also recorded 15 first downs, just one fewer than the Cougars. But turnovers proved costly. Switzerland County committed three turnovers, including two lost fumbles and an interception, while South Decatur protected the football throughout the night. The difficult field conditions played a role in making ball security especially challenging. With rain leaving the field wet and slick, the Pacers struggled at times to maintain their footing and secure the football. The two lost fumbles came at critical moments and helped South Decatur maintain momentum in a game that remained tight throughout. Despite the mistakes, Switzerland County continued to battle. Quarterback Aiden Mosley completed 9 of 15 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns, including a 45-yard scoring strike to Brady Jones. Mosley also led the Pacers on the ground with 31 yards on 13 carries, although two of his rushing attempts resulted in fumbles. Brackston Sullivan carried the ball 16 times for 83 yards, while Brady Jones hauled in three passes for 87 yards and a touchdown, including the 45-yard score. Camron Simpson added 29 rushing yards and a touchdown while catching four passes for 57 yards and another score. The Pacers took a 21-19 lead into the fourth quarter, but South Decatur was able to put together the decisive scoring drive. One of the biggest differences in the game came on third and fourth downs. South Decatur converted 4 of 10 third-down attempts and, more importantly, repeatedly kept drives alive when facing fourth down. The Cougars converted three of four fourth-down opportunities, while Switzerland County was 2-of-3. Those extended drives allowed South Decatur to maintain possession and keep the momentum on its side. Defensively, the Pacers were led by Grayson Levell, Aiden Greene and Peyton Stewart, who each recorded five tackles. Greene added three assists and a tackle for loss, while Levell also recorded a tackle for loss. For head coach Ryan Jesop, the loss was particularly frustrating because of the effort his players put forth. “Our boys played extremely hard tonight, and that's what makes this one tough,” Jesop said. “We just couldn't overcome a few mental mistakes, and South Decatur did a good job of capitalizing on them. The conditions certainly didn't make things any easier. It was wet, it was sloppy, and we had some trouble taking care of the football. But at the end of the day, we've got to find a way to overcome those things.” Jesop also pointed to South Decatur's ability to extend drives as a major factor in the outcome. “They made some big plays on fourth down and were able to keep drives going when we had them in situations where we needed to get off the field,” Jesop said. “Every time they converted one of those fourth downs, it kept the momentum on their side and put more pressure on us. That's something we've got to learn from. When you have an opportunity to get off the field, you've got to make that play.” Despite the disappointing Homecoming result, Jesop said the Pacers' effort was not in question. “I'm proud of how hard our kids fought,” Jesop said. “Nobody in that locker room quit, and they continued to battle right down to the end. We just have to eliminate the mental mistakes, take better care of the football and execute when those big moments come. That's the difference between winning and losing games like this.” The Pacers finished the night with 302 yards of offense and 15 first downs, but South Decatur's ability to protect the football and capitalize on Switzerland County's miscues ultimately allowed the Cougars to escape Vevay with the 25-21 victory. The Pacers are on the road this Friday playing Brown County at Columbus North High School, due to construction at their new turf complex.
